Beware of Online Dating Scams

Beware of Online Dating Scams

Friday, May 10, 2024/Categories: Security, Scams, and Alerts

In today’s “digital world,” online dating websites have become a popular way to meet new people. However, many who participate may not realize that using these websites can pose some risks. Online dating scams are becoming more prevalent and can range from people posing as someone they are not to serious financial fraud activity.

Criminals have found a way to prey on the vulnerabilities and emotions of unsuspecting individuals. But don’t fret, you can stay safe if you know what to look out for. Staying informed is your first line of defense in protecting yourself, your family, or your friends from scammers.

What does a scam look like on a dating website?

After Scammers have established trust with someone (may take months), they begin requesting money for various reasons, such as medical emergencies or travel expenses. They are smart, persistent, and convincing. They don’t take no for an answer. Unfortunately, once a victim gets worn down and sends the money, they likely will never see it again. Soon after the scammer receives payment, one of two things will happen; 1) they will cease communication, or 2) they will ask for more. It’s rare, but there have been instances where some victims were even coerced into scamming friends and family members out of money too.

Not only is there a deep sense of betrayal when someone who was being given dating consideration is duped, but the financial loss can also be substantial.

How to Protect Yourself

To protect yourself, it's essential to remain cautious and vigilant. Be wary of individuals who refuse to meet in person or make excuses for avoiding video calls. Most importantly, never send money to someone you've only met online, no matter how convincing their story may seem.

Finally, trust your instincts and stay knowledgeable. You can reduce the risk of falling victim to scammers while still enjoying your favorite dating app. And while you may not think of it when in a dating app, remember to trust your banker, too.
